Taking the week in almost chronological order for a change, this Sunday the Swindon Jazz Society features the pianist Geoff Eales and his trio at the King's Arms in Swindon from 8pm. This seems to be a departure from their usual Thursday gig at a venue that has had quite a few big names playing over the past few months. Eales, described as "a singular musical force", is also playing at Pizza Express in London on Friday.

On Wednesday, at the Jacqueline du Pr Music Building, Oxford Contemporary Music's autumn season continues with a concert by "a pioneering new percussion ensemble" called Three Strange Angels. This is, in fact, six players based around the founder members of the well-respected Ensemble Bash. They will perform a programme including work by Fitkin and Cage and culminating in Steve Reich's Sextet. The group uses a wide variety of instruments from traditional marimbas to radios and buzzers.

On Thursday, at the Spin (at the Wheatsheaf pub, off Oxford's High Street) saxophonist Rob Townsend is playing with the club trio. A man with a foot in two camps, Townsend is not only a compelling and respected jazz improviser who has worked with people such as Mark Lockheart and Django Bates but is also a featured soloist with ex-Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett with whom he has recoreded and toured extensively. Also on Wednesday the Rascals of Rhythm are at the Lamb Inn, in Wantage, and on Thursday Dicky White is at the White Hart, in Eynsham.

Looking forward to the end of the week, next Friday the Pete Downes trio, plus the legendary Dick Pearce, Ronnie Scott's resident trumpeter, is at the Divots at the Carswell Golf and Country Club, near Faringdon.

If you have the opportunity to get up to London this Thursday, there is a special evening at the Vortex featuring the extraordinary Evan Parker, one of the most influential figures on the improvised music scene who will be playing with John Edwards on bass and Tony Marsh on drums.
