Sir – Your leader comment, (June 7) is spot on. Street parties, even wet ones, are a great way to strengthen neighbourhood ties. Thousands of residents enjoy street events in Oxford every year.

This year with the Queen’s Jubilee, the Olympics and Car-Free Day on Saturday, September 22 there is plenty to celebrate. As long as the event is well organised and not too big, the city council makes no charge for closing a street to traffic.

The delight on children’s faces when they realise they can play safely in their own street is something to behold. Your readers can get more ideas at the Civic Society website: www.oxstreets.org.uk/ and the city council site at: www.oxford.gov.uk/PageRender/decB/StreetParties.htm So let’s party and build even stronger communities in Oxford.
