The death of 16-year-old cyclist Samuel Fleming was a tragic and totally unnecessary one.

He was hit by a Ford Focus near the turning to his home in Great Haseley as he was riding back on a dark November night after finishing work at Asda.

He had no lights on his bike -and the driver of the car had no chance of avoiding him.

It was a waste of a promising young life and we are not about to castigate the boy for a mistake that he paid the ultimate price for.

Instead, we would ask those cyclists who ride around with no lights after dark to read the heartbreaking report of his inquest and wake up to the fact that it could be them.

Cyclists run a dangerous enough gauntlet on Oxfordshire's roads every day.

Riding without lights, failing to indicate when turning and other daft practices are just asking for trouble.

A set of lights costing a few pounds really could save your life.

Now that's what you call value for money.
