Thieves stole five drums of copper cabling from a lorry while the driver slept in the cab.
The Scania lorry was parked in a lay-by on the northbound A34. The theft happened between 7.30pm on Monday and 4am yesterday.
Pc Ian Macpherson appealed for motorists who might have seen the thieves loading the cable on to another vehicle to call him on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
