AN organisation that represents police in Oxfordshire last night hit out at a controversial proposed appointment for the next Chief Inspector of Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary.

Thames Valley Police Federation spoke out against Home Secretary Theresa May’s decision to name Tom Winsor as her preferred candidate over Oxford’s top police officer Sara Thornton.

In a statement Thames Valley Police Federation said: “Tom Winsor is a solicitor and former rail regulator with no previous experience of policing.

“He was the author of two reports commissioned by the Home Secretary with regards police officers’ pay and conditions. The recommendations of the report are highly contentious and still under negotiation.”

There is speculation his nomination will be rejected by MPs at a pre-appointment hearing which would lead to the re-opening of the selection process.
