A ROSE Hill couple who fraudulently claimed more than £16,000 in benefits have been given community orders and told to pay the cash back.

Cuthbert Rivete and partner Miriam Nyamandura, admitted making false representations and failing to notify Oxford City Council and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) of changes of circumstances.

The claims related to housing and council tax benefit and Jobseekers’ Allowance worth £16,800.72 between September 2008 and September 2010.

They were sentenced at Oxford Magistrates Court on Friday having pleaded guilty on May 11.

Rivete was sentenced to 250 hours of unpaid work and Nyamandura 100 hours of unpaid work.

The pair were also ordered to pay £100 costs each. They will have to pay back the overpaid benefit to the council and DWP.

A council spokesman urged people to come forward if they know about cases of benefit fraud on 01865 252222. Residents can also email benefitfraudline@oxford.gov.uk or fill out a reporting form at oxford.gov.uk.
