A police officer had to be rescued by firefighters after a crash on the A423 Southam Road north of Banbury.

Two officers from Warwickshire Police were in the marked car when it left the road and overturned into a ditch near Mollington at about 6am on Saturday.

The passenger managed free himself but Oxfordshire firefighters had to use hydraulic rescue equipment to release the door of the vehicle to get the driver out.

Both were taken to the Horton General Hospital, Banbury for treatment, one with a head and rib injury and the other with a broken leg.

Their conditions were not thought to be serious. It is understood the officers were en route to an emergency.

The road was closed until 10am while investigators examined the scene. Anyone who witnessed the accident should contact Sgt Scott Silk on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
