THERE is going to be a trial to give housing benefit payments directly to social housing tenants (last Tuesday’s Oxford Mail).
This will start on June 17 and Oxford is one of five areas taking part in the trial.
Money will go to the tenant, to be paid by them to their landlord, instead of straight to the housing association or council.
I think this is a bad idea: 1. Because not everyone is good with money and people may fall behind with their rent payments.
2. People do not want to have to go to their housing association every week with cash to pay their rent, causing inconvenience to the tenant.
3. It is not always safe going about town with cash and vulnerable people may be attacked for their cash.
