Sir, I am disappointed that you failed to use the information that was provided to your reporter on issues surrounding the flooring in the common hall at Old County Hall (Report, October 13).
The 52ft by 33ft room is not simply a 'cafe'. It is also used as a gathering area for inquests conducted by the Oxfordshire Coroner. These include the many military inquests that he is conducting.
Bereaved families and legal people use this room extensively. It is also used as a gathering area for British citizenship ceremonies conducted by our Registration Service. Any large commemorative event or service, such as Remembrance Day, is conducted in this room. It is also a key meeting area for council staff with scores of meetings taking place there on a daily basis. The decision is whether we replace the carpet (£8,000 or thereabouts) or have the stone floor treated (£24,000). We need to decide whether we go for the cheaper short-term option, or the better value, longer-term option (a carpet would need replacing every four years).
No decision has been taken. Value for money will be a key factor. However I hope that people will not have the impression that this is simply a cafe and nothing else.
Keith Mitchell, Leader, Oxfordshire County Council
