Workers at Morris Radiators in North Oxford not only made car parts – they also enjoyed a social life within the factory.

The canteen would be turned into a theatre for productions by the firm’s amateur dramatic society.

This picture shows the cast at one of the society’s offerings, which were much enjoyed by fellow workers, their families and friends.

It is one of a collection of photographs of factory life in an album kept at the Morris section of the Oxfordshire Bus Museum at Long Hanborough.

We are not sure when and at what play this picture was taken, but the album reveals that the society’s productions included The Shop at Sly Corner and Baa Baa Blacksheep.

Allan Webb, who worked at the factory off Woodstock Road, designed many of the programmes as the society’s publicity manager – and also made a brief appearance in a play called Saloon Bar.

He recalls: “I was a policeman and came on stage to arrest someone. I said just one line.”
