PROPERTY developer Martin Young has lodged an appeal against Oxford City Council’s refusal to let him knock down a derelict house.
Mr Young wants to build five three-storey houses in Old High Street, Headington, to replace a building that he has left empty for the past five years.
The case will now be decided by a Government planning inspector.
The council turned down his application last December because it said demolition of the house would “materially harm the special character and appearance of Old Headington”.
In separate proceedings the council has ordered Mr Young to improve the appearance of the house but he did not do anything before the deadline on March 12.
The appeal will not affect the council’s improvement order.
Ultimately, the council could seize the house from Mr Young, a move demanded by neighbours who say it is an eyesore.
In his planning application appeal, Mr Young said his proposals for new houses would make “best use” of the site. He added that the proposed homes would “contribute positively” to the conservation area.
Anyone who wants to comment on the appeal should contact the Planning Inspectorate by Monday, May 7.
