THE traffic light rules: green is for go, amber get ready to stop or go, red means stop.
But not in North Oxford (Woodstock Road, by First Turn): green means go, amber means put the foot down and get over before it’s red, and red is put the foot down, don’t stop and never mind the elderly person on the crossing – try to miss them.
At 7am, Mr White Van Man at the lights on amber, foot down – whoops! It’s turned red – have to jam brake on because that woman is on the crossing – whoops! Missed her!
Driver and two other lads crack up laughing, very funny. I took down my hood and stared at them as I crossed and said nothing.
That’s okay lads. Let me know when your gran, mum or wife goes out and I will get in the van and do the same to them. Is that okay?
But what would you have done if you had hit or killed me? Not so funny then, is it?
Next week: 7.15am, lights red, I go to cross. A car comes speeding up, jams brake on, misses me by nothing and then carries on. Even the van driver stopped on the other side was amazed at that one.
Banbury Road lights, by the church, are on red: a woman on a bike is clearly colour-blind, as she tries to knock me down. I’m 5ft tall and it’s not dark – can’t you see?
North Oxford gets away with so much that the rest of the city can’t: cars on pavements, mad cyclists and so on.
Someone is going to get hurt or killed. The police are underfunded and can’t be everywhere at once.
