ST JOHN Ambulance is launching a family first aid campaign.
Regional training manager Ralph Brown said: “Many people are reluctant to learn first aid as they have concerns over having to use their skills on a stranger.
“But most accidents happen in the home so we are far more likely to come across a member of our family needing help than someone we don’t know.”
The charity’s research showed two thirds of people in the South East would not feel confident trying to save a life.
Oxford resident Christine Mitchell used her first aid skills in 2008 to save her grand- daughter, who was choking on a sandwich. Mrs Mitchell said: “The training I received through St John Ambulance kicked in straight away.
“I put Emily across my knee and gave her three back blows which dislodged the sandwich.”
