FAMILIES did their bit for charity yesterday with a sponsored mile around Oxford’s Cutteslowe Park.
More than 600 people ran and walked the distance to raise money for disadvantaged people at home and abroad through Sports Relief.
The event began with a zumba warm-up before Oxford triple jumper Nathan Douglas started the race at 11am.
Organiser Courtney Warden, sports development officer at Oxford City Council, said nearly £1,000 was raised through donations on the day.
But she said thousands more was likely to come as sponsorship cash was collected.
In 2010, the last time Sports Relief was held, the event raised more than £20,000.
She said: “It was a good day.
“The weather was great and people really enjoyed themselves.
“It raises people’s awareness of health and wellbeing and it’s a fun way to raise money for charity.”
Mark Lygo, city council board member for parks and sports, completed the mile.
He said: “I was amazed by the number of children there with their families.
It was a great atmosphere and it was a great day.”
