A 50-YEAR-OLD man who sexually touched a young and vulnerable girl has been given a suspended prison sentence.
Earl Williams was sentenced at Oxford Crown Court yesterday having earlier been convicted by jurors following a trial of a charge of engaging in sexual activity with a child. Williams, of George Moore Close, East Oxford, committed the offence early last year.
Judge Anthony King said: “The defendant came up to her room and touched her in an indecent manner.”
Nigel Daly, prosecuting, said Williams “rubbed her over her clothes”.
Adrian Amer, defending, said his client was “at a loss” to explain his actions.
He said: “It’s odd, at the very least, that a man who can reach this age (without any relevant previous offending) is convicted of an offence such as this.”
Judge King gave Williams a six-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, and a two-year supervision order.
He also ordered him to take part in a sex offenders’ programme and to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register for seven years.
