MUMS are being helped to get into the male-dominated world of football with training sessions in Witney.

The beginners’ sessions are running every Wednesday at the Windrush Leisure Centre and this week saw the first five women take part.

FA coach Vicky Bonham said: “The sessions are fun and aim to build confidence.

“The first session was really good. We learnt basic skills – dribbling and tackling – and had a two-versus-two game.

“The mums came away quite confident in their dribbling and tackling and they all seemed to enjoy it.”

Mum-of-three Jayne Mundy, 48, of Stonesfield, said: “It was really good fun.

“I help run a girls’ football team and I went along to try to get some more knowledge of the game in terms of playing.

“Football has always been a male-dominated sport and so for women and girls to get involved makes it more family-friendly.”

Mum-of-three Naomi Taylor, 34, of Witney, said: “I was apprehensive before I went because I have never played football before, but it was really good.

“It was really good exercise – better than being on a boring treadmill – and I’ll go back next week.”

Training runs every week, 1pm to 2pm at the Witan Way leisure centre and costs £3 per session.
