YOUNGSTERS in Abingdon have been raising money for charity with a sponsored bounce.

All 74 children at The Abingdon Kindergarten, in Loyd Close, are hoping to bounce a mile on a bouncy castle for Sports Relief.

The kindergarten has been taking part in a week of fundraising activities and hopes to raise at least £300 and teach the children about charity work.

Children from the age of nine months to four years took part.

Centre manager Michelle Stoddard said: “Instead of walking a mile we thought it would be more fun for them to bounce a mile.

“Today went really well. Some of them were unsure to begin with and needed encouragement but by the end they were loving it.

“We have spoken to the older ones about children in the world who have less than we do and they are starting to understand.”

Fundraiser Joseph Izzo, three, said: “I liked the bouncy castle. I like to jump up and down.”

The kindergarten aims to do three charity events a year.

Sports fans across the county will be getting active for charity this weekend as Sport Relief kicks off.

Oxfordshire is playing host to seven Sport Relief Miles over the weekend.

Hundreds of runners will be taking on a mile for charity – with two runs in Oxford and one in Steventon, Wantage, Didcot, Berinsfield and Thame.

Meanwhile former Berks, Bucks and Oxon amateur golf champion Ashley Walton is one of eight intrepid Frilford Heath members embarking on a 24 hour-golf marathon to raise money for Sport Relief today.

The players will tee off at 6pm and play through the night and following day, concluding at 6pm on Saturday and they have set a target of raising £5,000.

Donations can be made at the Frilford Heath professional’s shop or by visiting justgiving.com/ 24-hourgolfmarathon.

A team of Thames Valley Police staff are also raising money for Sport Relief by cycling the combined equivalent of Land’s End to John O’Groats and back in 24 hours on exercise bikes.
