I have no axe to grind with respect to the current Sunday trading regulations, nor any objection to their proposed extension for the duration of the Olympics and Paralympics this summer, but permitting the prolongation of larger stores’ opening hours once a week throughout England and Wales, supposedly on account of the occurrence of these Games, strikes me as being rather bizarre, not to say pretty fishy and downright hypocritical and opportunistic.
