Protesters barricaded County Hall yesterday to oppose plans for a residents’ parking scheme in East Oxford.
About a dozen neighbours from Magdalen Road and nearby roads blocked County Hall’s New Road car park with placards and banners.
The protest was against a proposed controlled parking zone (CPZ) on streets around Magdalen Road.
Campaigner Sarah McCloughry, of Silver Road, said: “If we have to pay to park from now on, why should the councillors get to park where they want?”
The £291,000 scheme would see drivers charged £50 a year to park outside their home.
Many say it will harm businesses, prevent visitors and mean more park on pavements. Others are in favour of the scheme.
Households would be allowed two permits each and up to 25 visitor day permits per year.
Councillor Ian Hudspeth, pictured being stopped outside County Hall, said: “You have to remember it was residents who came to the council requesting a CPZ. There are two sides to every story.”
Cabinet member Rodney Rose will decide tomorrow. He has been recommended by officers to approve the plan.
