THE UK’s top dogs may have been at Crufts, but the cream of Oxford-shire’s canine crop appeared at the county’s own version of the popular pet show.
More than 30 dogs competed for such hotly-contested categories as waggiest tail, best hurdler and champion biscuit catcher at Scruffs, the annual competition at the Cotswold Wildlife Park, near Burford.
And the four-legged county residents taking part helped raised £200 for Sport Relief.
Saturday’s show was judged by Oxford Mail writer Helen Peacocke.
Among those to come away with a rosette was handsome Airedale, Roxy, owned by Mindy Rowlands, from Brampton Drive, Carterton.
Roxy was voted dog the judge would most like to take home.
Mindy said: “Roxy is a lovely dog, so I’m not surprised she won.
“Scruffs was a fantastic event, and it was amazing how well all the dogs got on together.”
The prize for best in show was taken by wire-haired dachshund Minnie.
Owner Vicky Warner, of St John’s Drive, Carterton, said: “It’s a lovely show.
“The park is a great place to bring dogs.
“There’s loads of space and every time you come, you see something different.”
The park’s head of primates, Chris Kibbey, said: “Scruffs is a very popular event and highlights how keen the park is on greeting dogs and their owners.
“While some zoos don’t allow dogs, we see them as part of the family and – as long as they are well behaved – they are always welcome.”
