LIFE was put on hold for Dan Wymer and his fiancé Tamsyn Honour three years ago when she was diagnosed with breast cancer at 29.

Their wedding was postponed as she went through surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

But with the Witney couple now married and Mrs Wymer recovering well, Mr Wymer plans to raise £1,100 for Maggies Cancer Care Centre at the Churchill Hospital in Oxford.

The centre helped care for Mrs Wymer, and Mr Wymer has been running and raising money for it for the last few years.

He now plans to run the Carterton 10k on Sunday, March 25, to push his total distance run for the charity up to 1,100km.

Mr and Mrs Wymer, both 32, first met as students at Henry Box School in Witney but reconnected years later.

Mr Wymer said: “One thing led to another and I moved back to Witney so we could be close together.

“We got engaged and everything was going really well, but then the bombshell hit us.

“It is hard to describe, but your whole world stops, everything just stops and you just try to comprehend what you have just been told. She was not in any of the risk categories – she had no family history of cancer, was fit and healthy, did not smoke and was not a heavy drinker.

“It put life into perspective and changed our plans. We had to postpone our wedding.”

He added: “She only found it because she checked herself regularly and found something and went to the doctor.

“By catching it quickly she dramatically improved her chances.”

Mrs Wymer now only has to attend checkups once a year but will have to take daily tablets for another five years.

Mr Wymer is raising money to help fund a £3m purpose-built centre for Maggie’s Oxford at the Churchill. The centre is currently based in a portable unit on the site.

He said: “They were able to provide information and there was always someone you could go and talk to.”

Mr Wymer also hopes to beat his personal best during the Carterton 10k and run the event in 1h 50mins.

He is also considering running a marathon in 2013.

His employer, Stewart Milne Group, has agreed to match the amount he raises.
