Sir – Surely there must be someone in the Environment Agency (EA) who can see that the daft decision to splurge £3m on the recently renovated Northmoor Weir is a disaster.
It will not have any impact on flooding in the area, it will disrupt the village of Appleton for two years, and will cut a swathe through prime farmland over two miles long to drag all the heavy tackle to carry out a pointless, profitless, Putin-like procedure.
The EA spokesman has spoken of an invitation to discuss this folly. But the work will commence this month unless sense prevails.
The real tragedy is that there are many small communities who are in desperate need of flood defence improvements, and this distortion of fund allocation by the EA is quite irresponsible.
Harry Webster, Appleton
