A widow who turned £100 into £100,000 for the Oxford kidney unit has been campaigning once again.
June Keep has been inviting people into her charity shop in Wantage all week to raise awareness of the importance of becoming a donor, and of World Kidney Day, which was marked yesterday.
In 1979 the great grandmother-of-six, from Wantage, began fundraising for the Oxford Kidney Unit which gave her husband Malcolm two kidney transplants.
Mrs Keep used a £100 donation to buy new goods from wholesalers to sell, and rented a small shop in Mill Street, Wantage, with the goal of one day raising £100,000 for the unit.
Last year she celebrated reaching the milestone.
Mr Keep passed away in 2006, but is believed to have been one of the longest surviving kidney transplant patients.
Mrs Keep said: “I wanted to do something to let people know how important it is to sign up to be a donor and to mark the day.”
She has been giving away goody bags filled with treats and forms on how to become a donor from June’s Charity Shop.
The shop is now at 25 Market Place, near the church, and always needs donations of good quality used goods and unwanted gifts.
