IT is such a great shame to hear quite a few Swindon Town fans deliberately chanting 1970s rubbish in the very late stages of the U’s magnificent 10-man win at the Kassam Stadium on Saturday, simply because of the colour of a player’s skin.

From where I sat in the North Stand, it appeared to me that the target, central defender Michael Duberry, who was then close to the touchline in front of us, had indeed heard a bit of it.

But like the true professional he is, he appeared to just look upwards towards them, shake his head and get on with winning the game and securing a league double over Swindon.

What a superb example he is to us all by his reaction.

I’m delighted that he then later came to celebrate with us at the full-time whistle.

This was a proper way to reply.

Incidentally, for those Swindon fans involved, if you need a reminder of the year we’re now in, it’s 2012.

We’ll remind you from time to time I’m sure.
