SARAH Ayers found this picture hidden behind another.

It is clearly a football team, but who are the players, which team did they play for and where was the picture taken?

Mrs Ayers, of Wytham View, Eynsham, writes: “My suspicion is that it is associated with Eynsham and that the picture may include one of my ancestors.

“Your readers might be able to shed some light.”

Oxford Mail colleague Neil Braggins believes it may be an Army team, with H Coy referring to H Company.

He writes: “The uniform looks more tropical issue than domestic.

“It might be an Army side because of the 22 under the insignia on the players’ shirts.”

William Crossley, another Oxford Mail colleague with an interest in military affairs, tells me: “Having looked at it closely, I am fairly sure the soldiers are from the Cheshire Regiment, also known as 22nd Regiment of Foot in the days when units just had a number, hence the 22 on the shirts.

“The emblem is definitely the Cheshire Regiment’s, depicting an acorn and oak leaves. H Company would make sense.

“Given that the two men in uniform are holding pith helmets, it seems reasonable to assume an overseas posting, perhaps India.

“Normal routine pre-1914 was for one of the two Regular Army battalions in a typical county regiment to be posted overseas, with the other in the UK.”

Can anyone add any more?
