THERE were still plenty of hardships to come, but for the moment, it was time to celebrate.
The end of the Second World War brought jubilation throughout the country, with street parties everywhere.
This picture was taken at a Victory Party for children at the Shotover Arms pub (now McDonald’s) in London Road, Headington, Oxford, on June 7, 1945.
The Germans had surrendered just a month before, on VE (Victory in Europe) Day.
The picture belongs to Rosie Barlow, of Headington Quarry, and was sent in by Keith Brooks, of Gateley, Horspath.
Mrs Barlow is in the picture with her daughters, Carol and Margaret.
Others include Florrie Low, with sons Michael and John and daughters Mary and Pat.
Although there was joy in the air at the party, there was a warning in that day’s Oxford Mail that wartime gloom would remain for some time. The paper published a notice giving advice on how to claim your new ration books.
Can anyone name other revellers in the picture?
