LEGO-mad youngster Danny Straughan has done his family proud after his toy design won them a trip to a new multi-million pound hotel.

The eight-year-old from Cutteslowe beats thousands of entrants to win a competition to design a Lego figure to help decorate the new Legoland Windsor hotel.

Danny, from Aldrich Road, won the contest with his bellboy design, which will join the 6,000 mini-figures produced by the company on a wall behind the reception.

And he will ceremoniously place his finished figure in the last slot as his family stay at the resort on its opening night next Friday.

The Cutteslowe Primary School pupil came up with the design as he thought it would fit well into the hotel.

Mum Jackie Floyd, 43, said: “He was so thrilled he won the competition. When he found out he wouldn’t stop talking about it. The whole school knows about it. We never thought he would win it.

“He loves his Lego, he is always making different things. He is thrilled to bits and it is quite an amazing prize.”

Danny added: “I am thrilled. I am looking forward to seeing my drawing being turned into a real Lego man.”

The competition was open to children under 16 and was judged by professional Lego modelmakers.

Legoland Windsor spokesman Zoe Cartell said: “His entry was one of thousands. There were literally sacks full of designs.

“But we just loved it. It was a really cute design and it summed up what the hotel is about – it was fun, bright and lively.

“And obviously as it was a bellboy it will feel very much at home.”

The new hotel, which is part of a £25m investment, includes 1,600 models made from more than 80 million Lego bricks.

Dad Colin Straughan, 40, and sister Daisy Straughan, 10, will also come along to the opening night.

Mr Straughan said: “It was pretty amazing when we realised how many entries there were and the judges liked Danny’s design best.

“We are still a bit shocked to be honest.”

Cutteslowe Primary headmaster Jon Gray said the whole school had been impressed by Danny’s win.

He said: “We showed it in assembly and the children are very proud. Danny is really excited about it. He is very arty – he does lots of things with art.”

The youngster has also made a mini-Legoland with a go-kart track and a boatride. He also builds his own spaceships, cars and houses.
