TEACHER Ros Lester has been elected as Wallingford’s new mayor.
Town councillors picked Mrs Lester to be the new mayor at a meeting on Monday.
She will officially be chosen as mayor at the mayor-making ceremony on May 14.
Mrs Lester, 62, was deputy headteacher at St John’s Primary School until she retired 11 years ago. She still teaches part-time at the school.
Mother-of-one Mrs Lester is married to Kenny Lester, 64, who was the youngest British male Olympian when he took part in the 1960 Rome Olympics as a rowing cox.
Mrs Lester said: “With the Olympic Torch coming to Wallingford in July, and the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, it’s going to be a great year and I’m really looking forward to being mayor.”
Mrs Lester has already served as deputy mayor, mayor’s escort and deputy mayor’s escort.
She added: “When I get to be mayor I will have worn all four chains.”
