IT HAS prisoners of war, and more recently for football club pantomimes.

But despite its vibrant history, Woodstock Community Centre looks likely to serve the town for another 100 years as it prepares for a grand revamp.

But Woodstock Town Council wants to help preserve the town’s memory of the centre by collecting photographs and newspaper cuttings for a new exhibition.

And the town council, which is now leading the revamp, is calling for residents to loan the New Road centre any memorabilia they have to help make up the display.

Councillor Elaine Stokes said: “We want to try to make an exhibition of people’s memories of the community centre.

“If we can get enough, and it’s interesting, it would be great to do a permanent display for future generations to see.

“If it has lasted almost 100 years. Let’s hope there is another 100 years of memories for people to see.”

So far about £150,000 has been raised for the refurbishment but the council is still looking for donations as work is to start in the next few weeks.

The revamp will include installing several new features such as a stage, kitchen, boiler and audio system.

The hall will also be rewired, redecorated and boast new lighting.

Mrs Stokes said: “It should look really nice and we are hopefully going to do a courtyard garden at the back as well so it is going to be a complete refurbishment.

“And we will keep on fundraising so we can do more with it.”

The facility is now used for a range of events from weddings to dance group practices and Red Cross lunch club meetings.

The council hopes the work will finish in May.

Help with the exhibition is also coming from Marlborough School, Woodstock Primary School and Woodstock Under Five’s Association.
