THE woman killed by a train at Wolvercote was last night identified as the wife of a famous Polish film director.

Officials formally identified the woman as 53-year-old Irina Pawlikowska, who lived in Lincombe Lane, Boars Hill, Oxford.

She died when she was struck by a train at Wolvercote on Tuesday afternoon. Police are investigating whether she committed suicide.

Her husband is Polish director Pawel Pawlikowski, who made his breakthrough with his debut feature Last Resort in 2000. He is a Creative Arts Fellow at Oxford Brookes University.

The 16mm film was the winner of eight awards, including a BAFTA for the most promising new directing talent in British cinema. It also garnered critical acclaim and remarkable receptions at numerous festivals including Toronto and Sundance.

His film My Summer Of Love (2004) won the Alexander Korda Award for Best British Film at the BAFTA Awards in 2005.

In 2004 he became Creative Arts Fellow at Oxford Brookes University, following a major grant from the Arts and Humanities Research Board.

Mr Pawlikowski is spending three years at the university, undertaking research into the realist genres of contemporary film-making in Britain, and working with staff and students on the university's degree in Film Studies.
