THE RSPCA is appealing for witnesses who saw 15 chickens being dumped on a bridle path in Sunningwell .
The animal welfare charity was called last Sunday lunchtime after a white Transit-style van was seen with a crate near Dark Lane.
When the vehicle drove off, the chickens were running loose.
Animal collection officer Andy Eddy caught some of the birds with a net and herded the others into a nearby stable.
They were then taken to the RSPCA Blackberry Farm Animal Centre near Aylesbury.
Mr Eddy said: "We aren't certain that the chickens were left by the van which was seen.
"However, we are appealing to anyone who may know where these birds came from to contact us.
"It is illegal to abandon any animal and leaves them at risk of suffering pain and distress."
Anyone found guilty of causing suffering to an animal could face a maximum sentence of six months in prison and/or a £5,000 fine.
Witnesses are asked to call the RSPCA confidentially on 08705 555999.
