A burglar sexually assaulted and "savagely beat" a student at an Oxford college, a jury heard yesterday.

Sead Mirvic, 18, of Ingle Close, Northway, Oxford, denies attacking the student, who cannot be identified for legal reasons.

He is accused of burglary, sexual assault and causing grevious bodily harm on October 14 last year.

Paul Reid, prosecuting, told the jury at Oxford Crown Court yesterday that the woman had been in "constant agony" since the attack.

She suffered a catalogue of injuries, including a fractured left cheek, a fractured lower jaw, two black eyes, gashes to her head and bruising to her arms, legs and back.

Her jaw also had to be wired, her wisdom teeth removed and she required six stitches to her lips. She was forced to live off a diet of pureed food for six weeks after the incident.

Mr Reid said: "This young man has committed a number of burglaries in the vicinity of the college and you may think it is of significant relevance when you consider the DNA evidence."

After his arrest, Mirvic told detectives he had been at a party at the Royal British Legion club in Barton on the night of the attack, but police later discovered there had been no party.

Mirvic denies being at the college on the night of the attack.

The student does not remember the incident.

A statement written by her was read to the jury, which stated: "All I remember is being in my room, hearing a knock at the door, opening the door and then the next thing I remember is waking up in hospital."

The court heard that the victim and a group of friends had been to a college social event on the night of the attack.

The woman left the party alone after drinking two glasses of wine and four double vodkas and returned to her room where she texted a friend whom she asked to come to her room, Mr Reid said.

He continued: "She had opened her door expecting it to be her friend but it was not him."

The prosecution alleges it was Mirvic who went into the room and attacked her.

Mr Reid told the court the victim's friend later went to her room and found she had been attacked.

He said: "It was quite clear she had been savagely beaten.

"There was bruising and swelling to her face, blood round her mouth and, after opening the door to him, she collapsed on the floor. She was naked from the waist down. She told him she had been raped."

The jury was told forensic officers examined the student's room and found Mirvic's right thumb print on a photograph. A DNA expert concluded that swabs taken from the victim were a "partial match" to Mirvic's DNA.

The trial continues.
