2005 Pinot Gris Villa Wolf: If you only drink one German wine this year, make sure it's this one! Why? Because of its gorgeous white peach and grapefruit freshness. And with richness, structure and balance to boot, I can assure you it's a million miles from Liebfraumilch.
2004 Te Mata Woodthorpe Cabernet Merlot: Genuinely fine wine with an expressive nose, rich mocha and cassis flavours, spicy cigar box and ripe, velvety tannins. A class act Bordeaux blend from New Zealand with superb oak handling, this is drinking now but would repay some cellaring.
2003 Chateau Nardou: This modern, sweet and creamily plummy right-bank claret possesses plenty of smoothly textured tannins and no lack of finish. No wonder it won gold at a prestigious French wine competition. Drink now or cellar for three to four years.
2004 Turkey Flat Butchers Block Marsanne Viognier: A blend of two Rhone varieties (80 per cent Marsanne and 20 per cent Viognier), this unusual and exceptional white is exquisitely complex with citrus, pear and stony fruits and a lusciously creamy overlay. However, there's no lack of savoury minerality in this elegant Aussie white.
