Sir, I read with much interest three letters concerning the problem of buses in Queen Street, Oxford (September 29). Particularly the one from the Oxford Bus Company.

What has happened to the many good ideas that were submitted by the people of Oxford, as a result of their work being displayed in an exhibition a while back?

Many people with their submitted work felt it was not the problem so much as buses in Queen Street where a great percentage of shops are in the city centre, but many buses ruining our High Street or "The High", the street the great Pevsner so rightly described as "the most beautiful street in Europe".

Why not route the buses from Queen Street into St Aldate's and then on their ways via Abingdon Road and Donnington Bridge Road.

I have heard so many visitors stand in amazement in High Street and exclaim: "Why so many buses and all its pollution in such a historic beautiful street? Crazy!"

Local people showing visitors around our beautiful city find it impossible to show people our 'number one' historic street nowadays, due to the traffic bedlam from buses and the mish-mash that has been left to ensue.

We must bear in mind, our visitors talk among themselves when they get home. Does a derogatory report of our 'Jewel in the Crown' street encourage others to come, see and spend? I doubt it!
