AN EIGHT-MILE run through deep water and thick bogs is a challenge for anyone. But Abingdon mum Jo Edwards will be doing it in the dark.

Council worker Ms Edwards, 37, of Francis Little Drive, is raising cash for Oxford Children’s Hospital and the special care baby unit where her daughter was born.

She also has family and friends who have needed the hospital and the unit.

Ms Edwards will use a head torch to battle the army’s woodland terrain in Aldershot at the Grim Night Terror event on Saturday, February 4.

She said: “It’ll be pitch black, so we won’t be able to see very far ahead. The course runs through the woods and there will be people jumping out of the bushes at us to make it scarier.

“There are a few places where you have to wade through waist-high freezing-cold water and bogs and other parts where you have to scramble up sand dunes and crawl under camouflage nets.

“It is very cold, wet and nasty and what with it being dark, it is quite risky.”

Ms Edwards works in the land charges department at Vale of White Horse and South Oxfordshire District Councils.

She added: “I wanted to raise money for my local hospital because my eight-year-old daughter Harley, has been an outpatientat the Oxford Children’s Hospital, although thankfully not for anything serious.

“I’ve been a patient at the John Radcliffe maternity unit and relatives of mine have been treated at other parts of the hospital.”

Graham Brogden, head of community fundraising for Oxford University Hospitals, said: “We’re very grateful to Jo for undertaking such a challenging event and wish her luck.

“We are always delighted to hear about supporters fundraising endeavours and are particularly inspired by Jo, as we prepare for our main events season.”
