THREE school friends have launched a campaign to highlight the problem of potholes and rocky road surfacing in Rose Hill.

GCSE students Saba Wahid and Habiba Khan, who live there, have teamed up with fellow Didcot Girls School pupil Ayesha Sadiqi, who lives in Cowley, to set up a website calling for better roads in Rose Hill.

The girls have surveyed motorists in the Oxford estate and have launched a Facebook group as part of their studies for GCSE citizenship.

Saba explained: “We had to do a campaign on something we were really passionate about.

“One of our friends was learning to drive and when she was doing her first lesson she was finding it really difficult because of the roads, so we thought it was a really good issue to do.”

Habiba added: “She said it was really bumpy because of the roads and because of that she lost her confidence.

“We interviewed the driving instructor and she said it was annoying and might be damaging the car.”

As the building project to bring 254 new homes to Rose Hill nears completion, the developers behind the scheme, Taylor Wimpey, are about to start repairing damage to the roads caused during the construction work.

But the work they carry out on Danvers Road, Cottesmore Road, Lenthall Road, Rivermead Road and Clinton Close will only bring the carriageway back to the condition it was in when they arrived on the estate.

Oxford City Council and the developer are also in consultation about the resurfacing of part of Nowell Road.

The developer is obliged only to leave roads in the same state it found them.

Saba said: “We went online and made a poster to be displayed on the community notice board.

“We want people to know about it and we want to know if people will support the campaign.”

The group drafted a questionnaire and set out to find out how much public support there is for a plan to rebuild Rose Hill’s roads.

Saba said: “When we interviewed people most of them said they wanted to sort it out. Now we want the county council to sort the problem out.”
