The second generation of the Mini has been officially unveiled to the public at the Paris Motor Show, with the promise of more models to follow.
Michael Ganal, sales and marketing director of parent firm BMW, said 240,000 cars will be produced at the newly-extended Cowley plant "in the medium term".
He added: "The new Mini will serve as the starting point for further models.
"We are convinced that it offers the ideal foundation for the expansion of the Mini family. Mini can be expected to deliver further product innovations and extraordinary activities in the future."
The car, which will go sale before the end of the year, has new engines built at BMW's Hams Hall plant near Birmingham.
The many technical features include new suspension, designed to deliver a more comfortable ride without losing the trademark 'gokart' experience.
Dr Ganal added: "There have been improvements in just about every area. Everything that has distinguished Mini so far and that has given the vehicle its mass appeal has been optimised further."
