Most parents grumble when their little ones wake them in the early hours.
But three-year-old Jack Paltanwala has received nothing but praise for disturbing his mum and dad's sleep - because their Oxford apartment was on fire and smoke-logged when he stumbled into their room to wake them.
Dad Allan, a student at Oxford University's Ruskin College, said: "If little Jack hadn't woken us up when he did we wouldn't be here today.
"It could have been so much worse, but we're just so happy we're all alive and well. Jack is a star, we've been calling him Super Jack'."
Mr Paltanwala, 26, told the Oxford Mail how Jack went into his parents' room and told them his duvet had fallen off his bed.
He said: "It's terrifying to think what could have happened if Jack had not woken us when he did.
"I think he had a sixth sense. Although he didn't tell us the place was on fire, I think he knew something was seriously wrong and wanted to alert us without alarming us.
"As soon as I opened my eyes, I realised something was horribly wrong. I could barely see my hand in front of me because there was so much smoke."
Mr Paltanwala then leapt out of bed and woke his partner before racing into their lounge to see that a candle on the windowsill had caught fire and a blind was about to catch alight.
"I can't quite remember how I did it now but I managed to douse the fire with water, then throw the candle in the kitchen sink and get us all out," said Mr Paltanwala.
"We were coughing up black smoke and went to hospital to get checked out."
The fire happened at about 6am on Thursday morning. The fire brigade was not called because the couple managed to put it out themselves.
Mr Paltanwala, who is president of Ruskin College students' union and also works part-time for Newsquest Oxfordshire, publishers of the Oxford Mail, said the family now faced the task of trying to clean up their apartment.
He added: "There is considerable damage, hundreds of pounds worth. A window shattered in the fire, everything is covered in ash, the walls are all stained.
"There's a lot of tidying up to do."
