A 47-YEAR-OLD man died after fire swept through a bungalow.
The man's 77-year-old father escaped the blaze in Behoes Lane, Woodcote, after being woken up by the fire at 2am on Saturday.
Thirty-seven firefighters from Goring, Wallingford, Didcot, Eynsham, Henley, Reading and Pangbourne fire stations attended the scene.
Julian Green, risk reduction officer for Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, said when firefighters arrived they quickly found a middle-aged man who had been overcome by smoke inside the bungalow.
He said they carried him outside but he was pronounced dead by paramedics.
And he added the man's elderly father had escaped the property unhurt before firefighters arrived.
The blaze, which damaged the kitchen and part of the roof at the rear of the bungalow, was extinguished by six firefighters wearing breathing apparatus and using high-pressure hose reels and a main jet.
Mr Green said: "This is a particularly tragic and sad event where there has been a sad loss of life to a member of our community.
"The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation by a dedicated fire investigation team and is likely to be determined as an accidental fire.
"If the house had been fitted with smoke detectors this may have saved the gentleman's life."
The fire service recommends householders test their smoke alarms once a week and replace the batteries every 12 months.
