Householders across Oxfordshire are being encouraged to recycle their Christmas trees at the end of the festive period.

In Oxford, trees will be turned into wood chips and used in the city’s parks and open spaces.

There will be 17 recycling points for Christmas trees, which are open from today until Sunday, January 15.

Wrapping paper, Christmas cards, bottles, jars and foil from cooking the turkey can all be put in the blue recycling bin.

Extra recycling can be put next to the blue bin for collecting in a cardboard box or a clear bag.

John Tanner, Oxford City Council board member for a cleaner, greener Oxford, said: “I hope residents will reduce, reuse and recycle this Christmas.

“Yuletide is normally a very busy time for our refuse crews.

"But it’s never been easier for householders.”

In West Oxfordshire, trees, holly and ivy can be put out as garden waste from January 16.

Trees should be put in garden waste bins or left alongside food waste bins and recycling boxes on green collection days.

People do not need to be signed up to the optional garden waste service for trees to be collected.

Householders in the Cherwell district should put their trees inside or next to their brown bin, where it will be collected on normal collection days.

In South Oxfordshire and in the Vale of White Horse, residents who pay for a garden waste collection can place Christmas trees next to brown bins to be collected on the same day as recycling.

Trees can also be taken to some garden centres until Saturday, January 14. Participating centres are Root One, Brightwell-cum-Sotwell; Chinnor Garden Centre; The Tree Barn, Christmas Common; Toad Hall, Henley; Waterperry Gardens, Wheatley; Notcutts, Nuneham Courtenay; Wyvale Garden Centre, Chilton; Frosts, Millets Farm, Frilford; The Herb Farm, Sonning Common; Oxford Garden Centre, South Hinksey; and Charlton Park, Wantage.

Trees can also be taken to Oxfordshire County Council waste recycling centres at Oakley Wood, Drayton, Stanford in the Vale and Redbridge or to Thame Cattle Market car park.
