An Oxford United supporter has put a limited edition Oxford Loyal wristband up for sale on an internet auction site.

A person known only as "locky73" is selling the yellow and blue accessory - tipped to become a must-have collectors item now they are no longer being sold - on eBay.

The seller, from Oxford, describes the band as "quite rare" and urges buyers to "support OUFC even if not in this country".

He adds: "PS we will win the league this year."

The wristband has been put on at a starting price of £1, although no-one had placed a bid last night.

The bands were launched by United and the Oxford Mail in June as a way for fans to show their support for the club following the U's relegation from the Football League.

A total of 6,000 are now on the wrists of United fans in Oxfordshire and beyond.

The first batch saw more than 2,000 sold and a second order cleared just as quickly in July.

At the club shop, demand exceeded supply every time a new delivery of wristbands arrived.

Priced at £1, the profits made from the bands have been split between the Oxford Children's Hospital Campaign and United's youth development programme.

TV presenter Chris Tarrant, former England cricket captain Mike Gatting and TV presenter Timmy Mallett were among the stars to don them.

Eleven-year-old Oxfordshire singer Zoe Mace was also proud to sport the yellow and blue accessory.

Oxford United chairman Nick Merry said of the eBay sale last night: "I can't stop anybody doing what they want to do.

"They have already paid for it for charity."

Andy Chatfield, deputy editor of the Oxford Mail, said: "We would rather supporters kept their wristbands to show their loyalty to the club and their support for the charity, rather than try to profit from them.

"But at least it proves the bands are considered to be something a little bit special."
