Sir, It is sad to see councillor Jean Fooks (Letters, September 22) attempting to score political points. She knows very well that Labour was certainly not going to "impose wheelie bins on everybody". As someone who represents an area with lots of terraced houses without front gardens, I insisted that the new scheme should take account of needs of such households.
As a result, the officers brought a report to committee in March, when Labour was still running the city council, which states: "We propose amending the scheme in the following ways to address the specific concerns raised during consultation: a) where properties have small or no front gardens, these properties will be supplied with a fixed number of branded sacks for their refuse collection service . . ."
This amendment was accepted in full. We then got a promise of further flexibility, so that the scheme would be sensitive to individual needs and circumstances - very far from "imposing wheelie bins on everybody".
Susanna Pressel, City councillor for Jericho and Osney ward
