Sir, We would all like to get the buses out of Queen Street (Letters, September 22) but this should not be at the expense of people living in Norfolk Street, Thames Street and Speedwell Street.
The present Westgate plans, which do not include removing buses from Queen Street, involve the diversion of 182 buses an hour to Norfolk Street and Thames Street. If the 90 buses an hour using Queen Street were to be added this would mean one bus every 13 seconds travelling past people's houses. The resulting noise and pollution would be intolerable.
I agree that Queen Street is dangerous for pedestrians; I walk through it every day. However people spend only a short time in this street; they do not actually live there. We need a solution which will not simply transfer the congestion, noise and pollution caused by the buses in Queen Street to streets where people live.
