Spiralling energy costs have given most of us a bit of a fright when recent utility bills have dropped through our doors.
But imagine the shock of receiving an electricity demand for £4.9m.
That's the total annual cost facing Oxford City and Oxfordshire County Councils.
Now it is hardly surprising that authorities which control hundreds of buildings, schools and roads have to put a few more pennies than most into the meter.
But it is heartening that these super-consumers are taking steps to stop any possible wastage.
After all, the city council asks householders to do their bit to save the planet by recycling every last tin and newspaper.
And the county council oversees schools where a generation is being taught how important it is to 'go green'.
Our public services must lead the way - to save the planet and, of course, to save the taxpayer.
