I have just come back from walking around the south of Christ Church Meadow in Oxford and was so disappointed to see how it is apparently being allowed to almost literally run to seed.
The field immediately below the Broad Walk is a mass of thistles and nettles, and the one below that, which borders the Isis, is a weedy bog.
The walk is a delightful one and there were many people on it, with of course the usual crowd of visitors at Christ Church.
Surely there should be some management of the meadow to prevent it becoming an eyesore?
It could be developed as parkland, although mature trees might limit the lovely view of the colleges from the south.
It could be used for grazing, which would at least keep the weeds down and the grass in reasonable order.
At the very least, if it is not going to be farmed, it could be used as a nature reserve, with perhaps limitations as to entry.
It is a great shame that a place which could be one of the showpieces of Oxford is being allowed to deteriorate in this way.
