Oxfordshire County Council has ignored the majority of people (68 per cent) who said they were opposed to parking charges being introduced for residents' permits (Oxford Mail, September 20).

So much for democracy!

This is the latest in a long series of ill-advised county council decisions on traffic and transport in Oxford.

Remember the slogan that came with the Oxford Transport Strategy: "It'll be terrific without the traffic"?

Yet the traffic in Oxford has got worse, not better, because of foolish traffic schemes like the disastrous junction at the railway station, increasing pollution by diverting buses on longer routes, introducing cycle lanes against the flow of traffic in one-waystreets, and installing speed humps which later had to be removed.

All this has cost council taxpayers a great deal of money, without any benefit.

Residents of the county as well as the city should be able to be proud of Oxford, but the county council's policies have made it an unpleasant city for visitors as well as residents.

In view of the county council's multiple failures, why don't councillors - and their traffic "planners" - resign now?

If they won't resign, I suggest that voters should send them packing at the next local elections.
