A Wood Farm resident says heavy traffic made worse by the A40 work in Headington is trapping him in the Oxford estate.

Peter Bonney, of Nuffield Road, Wood Farm, Oxford, says trying to get on to The Slade from Wood Farm Road at morning and evening rush hour takes more than 10 minutes.

Mr Bonney says the situation has been bad for the last three years, but has got much worse in the last year since road improvement work began at the Green Road roundabout.

He has now called on highway chiefs at the county council to install traffic lights to control the traffic and to stop people being stuck waiting for a safe gap.

The protracted roadworks at the roundabout in Headington have led to long delays on the A40 and the Eastern Bypass. Drivers are now trying to avoid the jams by heading along The Slade.

Mr Bonney said: "Sometimes it is just ridiculous trying to get out of Wood Farm.

"You can sit in your car for up to 10 minutes before you even get a sniff of a gap to pull into.

"We desperately need some traffic lights so that people can get out of the estate and on to The Slade.

"Drivers get frustrated and there is the possibility that they could take too big a risk getting on to the road. It also puts youngsters who are trying to cross The Slade to get to school at risk.

"It has been going on for too long. We have been asking and asking the county council for traffic lights. Something needs to be done before there is a serious accident there."

Assistant county transport planner Steve Hayes said: "We are currently having a long hard look at the state of affairs at this junction in the light of comments from residents and bus companies.

"We have no firm solution as yet but people can be assured that we are aware of the prob- lems.We are on the case in terms of searching for solutions."
