A teenager who raised hundreds of pounds on a sponsored bike ride in memory of a friend killed in car crash fears he may never cycle again after being shot in the face.

Rhys Taylor, 14, is still recovering in hospital as doctors battle to save his eyesight.

He was shot in the eye with a pellet from a BB gun in Tarragon Drive, Greater Leys, Oxford, on Friday.

The Peers School student was a fundraising hero only a year ago, completing a 16-mile bike ride in aid of the Marshall Haynes Memorial Garden.

Rhys raised £200 completing the ride with close friends to help pay for the memorial at the school in tribute to his friend who was killed in a crash last year on Oxford's Eastern Bypass.

Marshall, 13, of Greater Leys was one of three teenage boys who died in the smash.

Rhys and friends completed the bike ride from Cowley to Kidlington and played football matches to help raise money for Marshall's garden, which opened in December last year.

His aunt Sophia Williams, 25, said: "He is pretty much aware he might have problems with his eye.

"He said he's worried if he loses his eye he might not be able to ride a bike again but he is being very brave.

"He used to play with Marshall all the time because he lived right opposite.

"When he died, Rhys joined the fundraising bike ride and the football match to raise money for his garden. Doing the sponsored bike ride really did mean an awful to lot to him."

Doctors are still battling to save the sight in Rhys's right eye and are waiting for forensic information from police about the pellet that hit him.

Cousin Paris Fine, 15, spent four days in a row at Rhys's bedside at the Radcliffe Infirmary.

She said: "He doesn't like staying indoors.

"He just wants to get back outside and start playing football and get on his bike again."

Friends and family have brought in CDs and DVDs and teachers from Peers School sent a 'get well soon' balloon to the hospital.

Police are still investigating the shooting.

A 33-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and has been bailed until October 21 pending further inquiries.
