I FELT an enormous sense of pride when viewing the picture of the newly unveiled Royal Wootton Bassett road sign (Oxford Mail, October 14).

The town is the first in 100 years to get the title “Royal” – and it could not be more deserving.

Our brave fallen war heroes who have died facing unrepentant foes across the globe have been shown the utmost respect by the people of Royal Wootton Bassett.

They say every picture tells a story, well the sign’s powerful, poignant image and its connotations signify the British character.

It is a character that has seen us overcome enormous odds in past wars with unwavering spirit and unrelenting guile.

It’s not just a welcoming road sign, it’s a statement of fact.

Our spirit will never be broken in supporting our war heroes with the dignity and compassion they deserve.

The repatriations are now at RAF Brize Norton and will no doubt continue in the same vein.
