Nancy Hood worked for Oxfordshire Museums and Cultural Services for 30 years, and was part of the team which developed Oxford Prison into the Oxford Castle complex.
She said: “When we moved into our new apartment on Lower Fisher Row, I realised that hardly any of the occupants would know the history of the area. The result is Fisher Row and the Watery Fringes of Oxford (Amberley, £14.99), which tells how Fisher Row was created by the Castle Mill and its stream.
The stream remains, but Castle Mill was demolished because of the need to widen Paradise Street for motor traffic, leaving only the mill race and weir.
The student block built by St Peter’s College on the site reflects the roofscape of the old mill.
